Project Reveal: My Recent Luxurious Bathroom Renovation in Barrington
"We trust you. Just do whatever feels like the right fit for us." That is hands down the dreamiest thing you could ever say to an interior designer, and it was the constant refrain my #RisingPhoenix client used every time we discussed her primary bathroom. Their complete trust and that creative license not only made me want to create a more timeless, cozy beautiful and functional bathroom than they could have imagined for themselves but it also set me free to build in all the layers of wonderful textures and patterns to accomplish just that.
My Professional, Perfected Process
I start with evoking a mood in a space to bring my clients' goals to life. Part of what trips up people is they tend to start by asking, "What color should I paint this room?" But this question offers no helpful parameters, compass or true north. Instead, asking, "What do I want this room to feel like?" provides a goal that can much more easily be achieved. Perhaps you'd take comfort in a primary bathroom where you feel tucked away and secluded. Before you start to think through paint colors, ask yourself what story you want a room to tell and hold, how you and your family members want to feel in a certain space.
My Custom, Completed Creation
Every surface we touch in our homes, from bathroom counters to furniture, to towels and linens to the tile under our feet, sends little signals to our brains about how to feel. We're such tactile creatures. Few things have more influence on setting the mood in a primary bathroom than lighting. The trick is to make sure you have a mix of light sources in the space. You may need can lights in a bathroom, specifically in the shower, but you can use pendants over the vanity and a add a chandelier for glam.
My Highly-Happy Homeowners
Using raw materials for the details in this bathroom design felt key to make the bathroom not only attractive but accessible and yes, down to earth, just like my clients are. So I chose hardware and millwork finishes that would live with my clients and evolve alongside their family over the years. The simple marble mosaic inlay flooring I added around the base of their free standing bathtub is a tiny feature, and yet it's one of my client's favorite details about her bathroom because it adds warmth and interest and that certain special touch.
All together, the little things really do add up to a space that not only has beautiful bones but also a big heart. Thank you so much for following along on my primary bathroom transformation journey – your support means the world! If you're ready to start your own project, feel free to reach out, and I'd love to offer guidance and help bring your vision to life!
Warmly,
Michelle
